How to Replace a Water Filter Cartridge

How to Replace a Water Filter Cartridge

Water Filter

How to replace a water filter cartridge on your home water filtering system. This article covers how to change both filters on a Aquasana AQ4000 filter system.

Some of this information may be helpful with any brand of filter system. Unpack the replacement filter kit and check the contents. You should have 2 replacement water filter cartridges, A and a B. Two replacement O-rings. If the O-rings are not flat lay them out and see if they will flatten out on their own this may take over night. If this does not work, put a book on them over night. The reason is if the O-rings are bowed from shipping makes then harder to make a good seal.

The first step is to lay your home water filtering system on its side. You can see on the filter caps are labeled A and B. Also arrows that indicate which way to turn to loosen each cap. Turn filter cap A to the right to unscrew or the direction the arrow points. Filter cap B should unscrew to the left or the direction of the arrow. They should only be hand tight. If they are too tight to remove by hand use the handles of a pliers to give you a little extra leverage. Be careful not to do any damage to the inlet or outlet water lines.

Water filter cartridge A will be the most difficult to remove. The seal on the top of the filter holds the cartridge in place. There is not enough room in the filter housing to get a hold of it. I find it easy to use a pair of pliers to get a hold of the filter and twist and pull to it out. Water filter cartridge B will be attached to the filter cap. Simply twist and pull the two apart. I lay the filters at each side of the filter housing. This helps to keep track of which filter is A and B. Remove both o-rings make sure the grove where they sit in is clean. Now install the two new O-rings. Put a small amount of food grade silicone based lubricant on the exposed area of each O- ring. This helps when installing the filter caps. The oil lets the caps slide easy on the rubber, which will make them seal easier. Installing them dry may let them kink and dislodge resulting in a leak.

Replacement water filter cartridge A is the white one. Install it in the A cartridge housing with the O-ring end in first. Putting some water on the rubber seal makes it slide in easier. Give it a push and turn until it is seated. The B replacement cartridge is the blue one. Install the O-ring end into the filter cap. In the same manner as the other filter. At this point, I check the O-ring to make sure they are still in place. Then go ahead and install the B filter into the B housing. Screw the B cap until it is firmly seated. Now check the other seal and install the A cap until it is firmly seated.

Keep the filter system on its side, turn on the water and activate the diverter valve. Check around the cap threads for any signs of water. If there is a little leak, try tightening the cap a little more. If this does not seal the leak, then open up that cap and check the O-ring it may have came out of its seat. Check to make sure it is not cut or damaged. If it is, the old O-ring might reseal. The other option is take one of the old seals to your local hardware store and match it up. The other step if none of these ideas work is to order a replacement seal. Now you can be reinstalled the cap as described above and check for any leaks.

If you do not see, any leaks set the AQ-4000 up right and leave the water run for about 2-3 minutes until the water runs clear. The water at first may come out cloudy or even have a black color, this is normal. Carbon dust is being cleaned out of the new filter cartridges. I save the water that used to flush out the filter system. Houseplants like the water, or put it on plants out side. To keep track of when it will be time to reinstall your next set of water filters. Write the next replacement date on a piece of tape and put it on the filter. This helps to keep track of time. They should be replaced every 6 months or 500 gallons on your home water filtering system.

Activated Carbon Water Filters Rock

Activated Carbon Water Filters Rock

Water Filter

An activated carbon water filter is primarily designed for the removal of chlorine from our drinking water, which is far more important than many people seem to realize. Many scientists and medical professionals now believe that the historic jump in cancer cases over the last century is primarily due to chlorine ingestion.

The truth is that activated carbon filters will remove far more chemical contaminants from your drinking water than just chlorine alone, and that is a good thing because in addition to chlorine there have been 2,100 other identified cancer causing agents that have been discovered in our water supply.

The reason that an activated carbon water filter for the home is necessary is that the water treatment facilities equipment is so dilapidated and out of date that there is almost no possibility that they can simply be overhauled in order to render them capable of eliminating these toxins from our drinking water.

The likelihood of these treatment facilities being gutted and re-fit with the modern equipment that they need in order for them to be able to effectively clean our water is extremely low, especially with our economy in the state that it is in. so it looks as though activated carbon filters are our only answer, but they alone cannot guarantee us pure water.

An activated carbon water filter is capable of effectively blocking most of the chemical contaminants that we face, but it cannot block every single one of them. That is why it is necessary to complement your carbon filter with what is known as a multi media block. Between the two of these filters you will be safe from 99.99% of all present chemical contaminants.

However activated carbon filters and multi media blocks are not the only protection that you will need to have in your water purification unit if you want for your water to be truly safe. There are also biological contaminants in your drinking water that are impervious to the chlorination disinfection process.

To an activated carbon water filter should also be added a sub micron filter. What this filter does is that it acts to remove all of the parasites and cysts from your drinking water, thereby guaranteeing that you and your family will be kept safe from the ravages of any waterborne disease that may be present.

Activated carbon filters could be a real life saver for both you and your family, but remember that the other featured filters are equally important as a way of protecting your family's health. The best thing that you can do in order to ensure that you are safe from the many toxins in your drinking water is to install an activated carbon water filter today.

Phosphate Water Filter

Phosphate Water Filter

Water Filter

A phosphate liquid filter is used when there are high iron levels in the water. A phosphate water filter will deactivate the iron ion and prevent it from discoloring the water. It will also prevent the problems with washing clothes that high iron levels present.

There are some problems with the phosphate and liquid filter system. If the deactivated iron form is left for a long time it will break down and insoluble iron will get into the water. This will cause problems for the water system. This only happens though when you have a water storage tank in a remote area where it is untouched for a long time.

A phosphate filter will also inhibit scale formation. That is to say, the pipes that carry the water will be cleaner. A phosphate liquid filter will reduce lead and copper leaching into the water supply, the filters will prevent the leaching to comply with the 1991 lead and copper law. A phosphate water filter will form a monomolecular film to inhibit rust and corrosion, this will protect the water distribution systems from repair and maintenance problems and expenses. A phosphate water filter will restrict oxygen permeation and hydrogen generation. A phosphate water filter is effective in multi-metal systems.

There are different grades of phosphate and filters. They range from food grade to industrial grade, but they all do basically the same thing. There are many companies more than willing to do all of the guess work for you, but phosphate water filtering does not seem like the best option for home usage, more so for mechanical and industrial situations where the water may be more contaminated with iron. A phosphate liquid filter is however an effective type of treatment in areas where iron is prevalent.

Pure Water Filters - Uncover the Truth About Potentially Dangerous Filters You Can Buy in the Stores

Pure Water Filters - Uncover the Truth About Potentially Dangerous Filters You Can Buy in the Stores

Water Filter

If you are like me, you probably don't trust your city water supply and can't believe every wild claim made by the companies that make pure water filters.

What we need is an overview of the products on the market, and a better understanding of how healthy, pure water can be brought into our homes and given confidently to our children. Let me do that for you.

From what I have read, we can divide all pure water systems into two broad groups: those that attempt to make water so pure they even strip out the natural minerals in it, and the others that attempt to filter out particles and the smallest organisms. Neither makes water as safe and healthy as you might expect.

Let's first look at pure water filters that produce demineralizing water.

It's popular for pure water filters to remove minerals as they clean water. It sounds logical, there is some old science that backs it up, and its widely used in large industrial water purification plants. Many city water authorities, for example, give you this water to drink. But it is not healthy.

The easiest way to remove minerals in water is to distill it.

You will remember those high school and college chemistry experiments where water was boiled, turned into gas, passed through a glass coil, and condensed back into water. That's distilling.

While the final sample of distilled water looks clean and definitely does not contain any bacteria, it still contains the synthetic chemicals that boil at a lower temperature than water and it leaves behind the minerals that all water picks up, deep in the earth, as it seeps past pristine rocks and dissolves minute traces of minerals.

Why would you want to remove these trace minerals with a pure water filter?

It's through our drinking water that minerals like calcium, magnesium and potassium get into our bodies. Thank goodness, because we desperately need them and are unwell and unhealthy without them. The World Health Organization concluded not so long ago that "drinking water should contain minimum levels of certain essential minerals." No natural water supply anywhere on earth is mineral-free. There must be a reason for that. I think we can say that distilled water taken over a long term is unhealthy, and the pure water filters that strip out minerals are not recommended.

There's another common way to demineralize water.

You put it through an extremely fine membrane filter using a sophisticated method called reverse osmosis developed 40 or so years ago by the printing industry that needed mineral-free water in some printing processes.

Reverse osmosis became popular in the Middle East after the first oil shock of the 1970s when Arab states had money to spend on industrial sized desalination plants on their coastlines, areas of desert that could be irrigated, and a population which could accept less-than-healthy water for some purposes. Submarines also installed reverse osmosis units.

It works by forcing water through a fine membrane that will block anything with smaller molecules than water.

And therein is the first problem. The molecules of synthetic chemicals like herbicides and pesticides are smaller than the molecules of water. So they go through, into the so-called "pure" water. And the second major problem is that the all-important trace minerals are stopped by the membrane filter. We've just seen that this is not good for us.

The other category of pure water systems are the candle filters we see in commercial advertisements.

Carbon block and granular carbon filters are used in many pure water filters.

These contain effective elements in a loose form, like a handful of sand. These pure water filters work by setting up a process where contaminated particles bond chemically or physically to the surface of the filter. In this fashion the contaminants are absorbed into the filter, or blocked by it. Minerals get through. But so do the microscopic cysts that carry disease and sickness.

A certain type of carbon called activated carbon is the best available at the moment, according to the U.S. EPA. But even that has limitations.

Then, there are multi-media block pure water filters.

These are among the best. They take advantage of what activated carbon can do, and then take purification to the next level. These pure water filters are also composed of materials that will absorb and stop contaminants, but its been compressed into a solid "candle" shape. In addition, these filter units have extremely fine porous barriers that the water has to pass through. This barrier stops sediment and the dangerous Cryptosporidium and Giardia cysts that bring stomach illnesses. By making the active filter solid, this type of system prevents the channeling effect of granular filters, whereby some of the water actually doesn't make physical contact with the active purifying materials in the filter.

So, to sum up, pure water filters can be divided into two groups. Those that take out the healthy trace minerals we need and those that let them through while trying to block synthetic chemicals, bacteria and viruses. In my opinion the second type is better if they have components that stop all harmful contaminants, because our bodies can take in trace minerals by drinking it.

Home Water Filtration Systems, Remove Bad Odor, Taste, And Dangerous Chemicals Like Chlorine And Flu

Home Water Filtration Systems, Remove Bad Odor, Taste, And Dangerous Chemicals Like Chlorine And Flu

Water Filter

I've looked at and studied many home water filtration systems.  While no system is perfect there are systems that have been engineered for high levels of filtration (8 to 15 stages) and performance with low maintenance and at a surprisingly low cost.

Protect Yourself And Your Family From Contaminated Water

Water Filtration Means Water Safety Many people are concerned over water safety, particularly drinking water safety.  Sometimes the concern is due to a sulfur smell or taste but you may have a real concern because of chlorine and fluoride in your water particularly with infants in the home.   If you are concerned and want to remove the bad odors and taste from your water then you are in the right place.  Others would also have concerns about the chlorine and other chemicals in their shower or bath water we will also discuss this. Home water filtration systems can accomplish removing all of this in one central unit for the whole house or you may choose separate filtering for your drinking water and showers.

Drinking water filters attach to the tap or can be mounted under the counter.  A separate shower or bath water filter can be used for bathing water. The chemicals and minerals in the water also make soaps and shampoo less effective and even leave a film on your skin, your clothes, and your dishes.  A simple water softener can take care of many of these cleaning issues yet a whole home water filtration system might be the best choice because they also make your water healthier.

Water Filter Basics The most common drinking water filters are carbon filters, UV filters, reverse osmosis filters, and ceramic filters.  All clean your water of particulate matter and microorganisms.  Microorganisms are of particular concern when considering a well water in line filter. As you will see there is a great variance in exactly what these different types of filters do.  There are four basic types of filter used singly or together in home water filtration systems,

Carbon filters usually screw on to the tap.  Water is cleaned by passing it through layers of activated charcoal.  The impurities stick to the carbon and clean water passes out.   Brita and resin based water filters use powdered carbon bound with a resin into small blocks that provide even higher filtration than activated charcoal. Ceramic filters work the same way but use silicon diatomaceous earth instead of carbon.  These passive filters provide a lower level of filtration than other types and the filters need to be changed at regular intervals because they lose ability to clean over time. UV Water filters uses focused ultraviolet light to kill microorganisms and other biological impurities in the water.  These filters don't remove the particulate matter.  When used in home systems UV filters are usually part of a system that uses other processes to remove the debris. Reverse osmosis water filters provide the highest level of purification of your water.  Usually there is an activated carbon filter combined with a UV filter although other filtering is sometimes used.  These systems can even remove salt from sea water.  These filters ensure that your drinking water is as pure as possible.
Filters For Shower And Bath: Shower and bath filters are becoming popular.  In many places, our water is over-chlorinated.  Chlorinated water, like "hard water," makes your shampoos and soaps less effective, when you remove the chlorine you will probably find that you use less soap and shampoo. Perhaps the biggest trouble with chlorine is a health issue.  The chlorine vaporizes with the steam in your shower and irritates the lungs.  Shower filters that attach at the shower head can filter out chlorine and other impurities and removes these unhealthy vapors.  These filters typically are metallic because the carbon doesn't work well with hot water.

Home Water Filtration Systems: The best home water filtration systems give you the whole shooten' match.  These systems attach where water comes into the house and the water passes through multiple filters to remove all sediment, chemicals, bacteria, and contaminants before they enter your home.   All of the water that your family uses is filtered, pure, and healthy. Rest easy knowing that chlorine and fluoride water filters are working along with filtering for bacteria, mercury, lead, and arsenic along with 500 or more other dangerous contaminants.

How A Whole House Big Blue Water Filter System Will Keep Your Family Safe From Bugs And Diseases

How A Whole House Big Blue Water Filter System Will Keep Your Family Safe From Bugs And Diseases

Water Filter

Big blue water filters come as single units or can be used in a whole house big blue water filters system. The whole house water filter system consists of main filter housing and at least one filter cartridge.

If you are concerned about your water then you should really go for a two filter housing installation which will give you two levels of filtration and protection.

The first filter will be for larger bits of sediment and the other will deal with smaller viruses and chemicals. Why you should get a filter system.

What Is In The Average Tap/Faucet Water In Your Household?

Pharmaceuticals

In March 2008 the Associated Press published reports found various pharmaceutical compounds in the water supply. Your municipal water treatment facility cannot deal with 100% of these chemicals.

Microbial Cysts

Microbial cysts can enter your water from animal or human fecal waste. Cryptosporidium commonly found in lakes and rivers may enter your water supply. These microbial cysts cause nausea, diarrhea, gastrointestinal illnesses and stomach cramps if not cleared from your system effectively.

Agricultural Pollutants

Agricultural pollutants are the run-off form herbicide and insecticides from the agricultural industry that can be dangerous to your health.

Common pollutants are toxaphene which can cause liver or kidney problems. Then there is simazine, atrazine and carbofuran which can cause anything from cardiovascular and reproduction problems to blood and nervous systems disorders.

Sediment (Rust)

Sediment such as sand and dirt can come from soil runoff, while rust can come from corrosion of steel and iron pipes from your own pipes or water main. If there are too many of these particulates in your water it can cause nausea, cramps and diarrhea.

Peace Of Mind

The beauty of a whole house big blue water filters system is that special filters can be added if you have these types of problems in your home water supply. They can be used to remove iron, bacteria, hydrogen sulfide or other chemicals in your water supply.

A whole house big blue water filters system can filter anywhere between 10,000 to 100,000 gallons of water between filter changes; it all depends on how many contaminants you have in your water.

There is a pressure release button that will tell you when the filter is spent and you need to swap it out for a new one.

The Work From Point Of Entry Into Your Health

The way big blue water filters system work are as a point-of-entry (POE) system. This means the water from your whole house is safe to drink as water is filtered from the main line as it enters your house.

If you want to protect your family; especially the young and old who are most at risk if your water system has any type of contaminates then big blue water filters can be the peace of mind you are looking for.

Big blue water filters come in all shapes and sizes and there will be one that will suit your and you family's needs. This will be able to keep you and your family safe from bugs and disease.

V19 9/2/09 Visiting My Koi Mentor's Pond

V19 9/2/09 Visiting My Koi Mentor's Pond Video Clips.

Very privileged today to have had the opportunity to visit a very special pond. Not one that is huge, nor one that focuses too much on visual aesthetics, but one with SUPERB polished living water for koi. Total tonnage is 47 tonnes, of which one third is in the up-down chamber filter which is complemented by a complex external filtration system reminiscent of a petrochemical plant. TDO levels are raised above saturation levels by cavitation technology and temperature is maintained at about 25C by a chiller. The pond is only 3 feet deep and is run on a straight flow system with water returns at one end of the pond and skimmers and all bottom drains at the opposite end. 25 jumbos (including ginrins and doitsus) are currently housed in this pond, the flagship pond out of 4 koi ponds located at these premises. Almost all of them are in the 80-95cm range. The owner is highly respected in the koi circuit, even in Japan, and also has an impressive arowana collection as well as sting rays and other fresh water creatures, all of which are treated with music therapy!! :-)

I have Fluval U2 filter and I'm showing just how simple it is to set it up even with one hand, while I'm doing the video :) It has 3 year warranty, it's completely silent, you can adjust the water flow, depending on the type of fish you have or the power of filtration you need. You can either use it in aquariums or terrariums. It has easy cleaning system: just flip it front and take out the foams, the bracket that holds the filter in place, stays inside the whole time. Enjoy it, I recommend it! My tank is 10 gallons, but I like to have filter that is for a bit bigger tanks.

South Indian Coffee Making Made Easier

South Indian Coffee Making Made Easier Video Clips.

There are ways and ways to make coffee and varieties and varieties of coffee making equipments available in the market ..i have tried out quite a few and have found one method of making coffee which works well for me .. and im sharing it here for those of you coffee lovers who would like to try .. here is how I do it : I take about 250 gms of coffee powder ground into a coarse powder ( i blend 40:40:20 of peabury:arabica:chicory roasted seeds bought out ) add it into one liter of cold water and heat the water to about 90 degrees heat ( you ll know because thats when it starts to go over ) ; i turn off the heat and wait for a few minutes till the coffee powder begins to settle down , then pour it onto a filter cloth which is tied over a vessel ( as shown in the video ) and allow the coffee to filter out; then i squeeze out the remaining decoction from the cloth store the decoction ( you can store it for a few days in a fridge ) ; then to make coffee i heat milk to a boil ( ONLY THE MILK, NOT COFFEE DECOCTION ) and pour it into a tumbler containing about 3 table spoons of the decoction and sugar .. i stir the sugar and pour the resulting coffee into a small vessel from a height so that the coffee gets areated and foaming and then DRINK ! Note: If the milk is too rich then dilute it a bit.. you dont want your coffee to taste too milky .. this holds mainly for milk in the USA where I had found the milk could be diluted by adding 25% water ...

Choosing The Best Faucet Mount Water Filter

Choosing The Best Faucet Mount Water Filter

Water Filter

If you are looking to get a faucet mount water filter for your home, there are some important factors to know before you take the plunge. The problem is that many simply don't remove enough of the contaminants to keep you and your family safe.

A good example of a bad faucet mount water filter is reverse osmosis. For some reason these are still popular despite the fact that they cannot remove many of the harmful chemicals and do remove the good trace minerals like calcium and sodium.

They also waste an astonishing amount of water, keeping only around 5-15% of what they use and require regular maintenance.

There is no doubt today that the latest activated carbon filters will provide you with the most protection, with the best able to remove just about all of the main contaminants.

Now these types are not more expensive and can be picked up for around 0 if you shop around online. They can provide you with healthy and pure water (with the tracer minerals intact) for less than 10c a gallon.

You should also expect a decent flow rate of around 30 gallons per hour or you will be left frustrated by the trickle coming out of your new faucet mount water filter!

The importance of having at least one pure water faucet in your home cannot be underestimated today. Recent studies put the amount of toxic chemicals in drinking water at over two thousand and two of them represent the greatest risk - chlorine and lead.

Chlorine is used to disinfect the supply by the municipals but must be removed before using. It is a fact that you have a 93% higher chance of getting cancer if you do not take out the chlorine first.

The increasing use of chloramine to disinfect the supply instead of chlorine has led to increased levels of toxic lead in the water as it leaches it out of the fittings and pipes.

Only a dual filter carbon system with ion exchange and sub micron filtering can remove 99% of both of these toxins.

With the situation looking set to deteriorate more as the municipals struggle to cope with our increasing dependence on chemicals today, it is good to know the best faucet mount water filter can protect you and your family from whatever may enter the supply in the future.

Why Everyone Should Use a Household Water Filter Today

Why Everyone Should Use a Household Water Filter Today

Water Filter

It seems like every time you turn your head, there's another water scare of some sort and with thousands of toxic chemicals in our supplies, a household water filter is fast becoming a necessity. The most crucial part is choosing the right one otherwise you can still be at risk.

There is a vast array of household water filter products to choose from and the majority still leave many dangerous toxins in your water.

As we are composed of 70% water ourselves, the quality of what we drink directly impacts on our health and well-being, so the purer the water, the healthier we become.

In the early 1900's, before the prevalence of chlorine, pesticides, herbicides and the thousands of other chemicals that we are exposed to every day, the average American had a 1 in 50 chance of getting cancer, today 1 out of 3 people can expect to get cancer in their lifetime, with 1 out of 2 men falling victim to it.

While reverse osmosis systems are effective for removing chlorine, they still allow many harmful synthetic toxins to pass through their filters like pesticides and herbicides and strip out essential trace minerals instead which we need like calcium and magnesium.

The very best type of household water filter is an activated carbon system. When combined with a multi-stage process and ion exchange they will remove 99% of the harmful toxins and leave those minerals in.

Home water filtration is the easiest, most effective and most economical way to have safe, healthy water for you and your family.

You may have heard recently how rocket fuel was found in some supplies illustrating how easy it is for contamination to occur and with many municipals changing over to chloramine to disinfect our water, lead levels look set to rise.

Chloramine is a mixture of chlorine and ammonia and has been proven to leach lead from the pipes and fittings.

To ensure you have a plentiful supply of the purest, safest and best tasting water, selecting the most effective household water filter will probably be one of the best investments you could make for your family's health.

Visit my website today if you would like to learn more about the types of household water filter that I personally recommend and use.

How to Choose a Water Filter System For the Whole House - Do This Right and Save!

How to Choose a Water Filter System For the Whole House - Do This Right and Save!

Water Filter

What is the first step?
There are a few things to consider as you begin this project. You may want this for your health, and you may want to do this for the taste, but the question is, "what do you look at first?" What are the important features to consider, and how do I determine which water system is best? Well, there are a couple things that anyone looking for a water filter system for the whole house, or a smaller counter top unit, needs to know. Here is a key: start by determining what is in your water now. There could be chemicals, bacteria, sediments, and even more. You need to find out who your water enemy is! One easy, and sure way to do this, is to contact your local division of the E.P.A., and obtain a copy of their annual water quality report for your area. Later, you should get a specific test for your own house. After that, you will need to learn about filter types and purifiers. You can then choose which water filter system for your whole house, or which individual unit for each sink or shower, would be best in your case.

Now, choose your weapon.
Do you know the difference between a charcoal filter and a UV light purifier? Do you need both? You must determine which type of filter, or purification unit is needed, for your specific needs
A water filter system for the whole house will incorporate filters and purifiers, not just one. I found that a water filter system for the whole house was more expensive initially. However, it is less expensive than putting individual units at each water outlet, so you will need to keep this in mind while you determine your budget for this project.

Design your system the way you want it!
Figuring out what you need for your own house can be a little confusing. Your water may smell bad, as mine did. I was, and you may be also, worried about the high levels of chlorine in your water. You may have bad tasting water from lots of minerals. In the end, I chose the water filter system whole house, this way you not only make all the drinking water better tasting, but the water in the showers and bath will be safe as well. You too may find this to be your best choice over all, because you can then specifically choose from the various filter types to address your water problems specifically. Most manufacturers of water treatment systems will offer a variety of options which you can personally tailor your own specific requirements.

You can do this yourself, and it does not have to be hard.
In summary, to choose the best water filter system for your whole house, or individual units, you need to do some home work. First, educate yourself! Then, determine what that actually is in your drinking water! Next, learn what each type of filter does. With this knowledge, you can make your best choice, saving you both time and money, especially when buying a water filter system for the whole house.
